Dear Participant,

My name is Kristen Konkel and I am a researcher from Colorado State University in the Department of Psychology. We are conducting a research study entitled “Perceived Aspects of the GLBT Community” in which we will examine gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons’ views of the GLBT community and their involvement with it. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Justin Lehmiller and the Co-Principal Investigator is Kristen Konkel, both from the Department of Psychology.

We would like you to complete a brief online survey in which you will answer questions about your perceptions of the GLBT community, your experiences with it, and your own personal behaviors. The only requirements for participation in this study are that you are at least 18 years of age and self-identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. This survey can be completed from any computer connected to the Internet at your own pace. Participation will take less than 15 minutes of your time. Your participation in this research is voluntary. Because you may be asked about sensitive topics (including drug use and sexual behavior), you may skip any questions you are uncomfortable answering. If you decide to participate in the study, you may withdraw your consent and stop participation at any time without penalty.

To ensure your privacy, you will not be asked to provide any personally identifying information. In addition, all information that you do provide will be kept confidential. Your IP address will be collected for quality control of the study, but this information will be destroyed once the data had been downloaded. Data will be encrypted and stored in a secure on-line database that only the lead investigators on this project will have access to. While there are no direct benefits to you, we hope to gain more knowledge about how the GLBT community is viewed and factors associated with level of community involvement.

There are no known risks associated with participation in this study. Although it is not possible to identify all potential risks in research procedures, the researchers have taken reasonable safeguards to minimize any known and potential, but unknown, risks.

This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at Colorado State University. If you have any questions, please contact Kristen Konkel at or Dr. Lehmiller at If you have any questions about your rights as a volunteer in this research, contact Janell Barker, Human Research Administrator, at 970-491-1655.
